Hyundai Tucson – All about the Facelift Model

The first-generation Hyundai Tucson was a huge failure in the Indian market. Unfortunately, it was a product with a lot of potential launched at the wrong time. Also, it was priced too high for someone looking at an SUV. It was the only ‘soft-roader sold in India back in 2005 and it had a certain appeal to it.

Also, it rivaled the cheaper Honda CR-V and when you could get a Honda at that price back then, buying a Hyundai made no sense to customers. And this was also a period wherein petrol didn’t cost more than 50 rupees a liter. Hyundai lost hope and never bothered bringing its second-generation Tucson to our market. However, Hyundai saw fit to re-enter the segment with the third-generation model with a bolder, more confident approach.

So they ended up launching the new SUV in 2016. It looked sharper, more premium and given how the SUV craze was slowly beginning to grip the market, it made perfect sense. This model slotted in between the Creta and the Santa Fe, and when it was first showcased at the Auto Expo back then, it lured a lot of interested buyers.

It came in as a more competitive package and seems to have a good number of buyers across the country. It’s not a full-size SUV; it’s a soft-roader and feels made more for the city. In 2020, Hyundai updated the Tuscon with a BS6-compliant engine, a new 8-speed automatic gearbox, and extra features.

So, anything new?

For the 2020 Hyundai Tucson, there are updates alright, but not very prominent updates like what you’ve seen on the new Verna and Elantra. The overall silhouette remains the same, but the cascading grille looks sharper, finished in chrome and gloss black. It now gets full LED headlights and new DRL elements bordering the fog lights. You’ll even notice new 18-inch alloy wheel patterns, while the rear sports a mildly restyled bumper, refreshed LED taillights, and reflector strips on the upper half of the bumper. There’s no Hyundai badging at the rear anymore; you just get ‘Tucson’ and ‘HTrac’ (the brand’s new AWD system).

Anything new inside?

The most significant of changes can be seen inside the Hyundai Tucson – it features an all-black theme and a dashboard that looks very different from the old one. The almost slab-like, old-fashioned fascia has been replaced by a curved design. A part of it is also covered with double-stitched faux leather and the 8.0-inch touchscreen unit sits atop the dashboard.

The black theme may seem a bit dull to some, but the beautifully contoured dashboard makes up for it. The front passenger seat which – on the previous model – wasn’t adjustable for height, is now powered and can be raised too. Quality, as expected, is top-notch and the faux leather on the dashboard looks quite classy, to be honest.

In terms of features, Hyundai Cars have equipped it with powered front seats, a panoramic sunroof, Hyundai’s BlueLink connected-car tech that includes SOS functions, an onboard e-SIM and a partner app that allows the owner to keep tabs on his car remotely, a wireless mobile phone charger, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, a powered tailgate with hands-free opening, an eight-speaker sound system from Infinity, auto headlamps and wipers, dual-zone auto climate control, keyless entry and goes and driving modes.

Space continues to be good in the Hyundai Tucson, as there is ample room for five occupants, thanks to the width of the rear seat. The headroom is decent. The backrest of the rear seat can also be reclined for better support. But we found that we were seated quite low, something you least expect in an SUV. Thanks to the large sunroof, it does give you a feeling of airiness inside. Boot space is excellent, as most suitcases will fit in effortlessly.

Power update

Hyundai Cars have given its Tucson’s 2.0-litre petrol engine a BS6 update and have dropped the option of a manual gearbox, while the 6-speed torque-converter auto ‘box soldiers on. However, there’s also a new 8-speed automatic transmission available. AWD is offered only on the top-of-the-line diesel model. The engine is smooth and refined, but rev it to its limit, and you’ll hear the motor getting louder. The engine develops 182bhp and 400Nm of torque. The responsiveness remains the same as before.
